Learn when to use ser or estar with personal characteristics!

Ser orgulloso: to be arrogant / estar orgulloso: to be proud of

Estar + adjetivos descriptivos: it usually refers to characteristics that change. It is also used to say how something looks.

  • Hoy estรกs muy guapo: you look handsome today.

Ser + adjetivos descriptivos: it usually refers to permantent characteristics.

  • Tรบ eres muy guapo: you are very handsome.

More adjectives to describe people:

  • Despistado: absent-minded
  • Joven: young
  • Nuevo: new
  • Viejo: old

However there are some adjectives that change their entire meaning when they follow ser or estar.

  • Estar listo: to be ready.
  • Ser listo: to be smart.
  • Estar orgulloso: to be proud of something
  • Ser orgulloso: to be arrogant.
  • Estar interesado: to be interested in something
  • Ser un interesado: to be a stakeholder
  • Estar molesto: to be upset
  • Ser molesto: to be annoying
